What Should Homeowners Do to Prepare for a Roof Replacement and Why Does It Matter?

To prepare for a roof replacement, homeowners should follow key steps that minimize disruption, protect property, and ensure contractor access and safety. Replacing a roof is a significant investment and a major home upgrade, so thoughtful preparation is crucial. From moving cars to protecting pets and belongings, every step contributes to a smoother, safer experience and better project outcomes.

How Can You Keep Children and Pets Safe During a Roof Replacement?

The noise and commotion of a roof replacement can be unsettling for children and pets. For their safety and comfort, designate areas of your home that will be off-limits during construction, and if necessary, consider arranging for them to stay elsewhere during the noisiest parts of the project.

Why Should You Move Vehicles and Secure the Garage Before Roof Work Starts?

To give contractors easy access to your property, move vehicles out of the driveway and park them away from the work zone. Additionally, keep your garage doors closed to prevent dust, debris, or potential damage from affecting your vehicles or stored items.

What Interior Items Should You Secure to Prevent Damage During Roof Installation?

Roofing work often causes vibrations that can travel through the structure of your home. These vibrations may dislodge fragile items or wall decorations, so it’s a good idea to remove or secure anything that could be damaged before the project begins.

How Can You Protect Items Stored in the Attic During Roof Replacement?

During a roof replacement, it’s common for dust and debris to fall into attic spaces. Cover any stored belongings with sheets or tarps, and be prepared for some cleanup after the work is done to get your attic back to its original condition.

Which Outdoor Items Need to Be Cleared Before Roof Work Begins and Why?

Move outdoor furniture, grills, garden tools, and any decorative items to a safe location away from the work area to protect them from damage. This will also provide the contractors with a clear space to move materials and tools more easily.

Why Is It Important to Trim Trees and Maintain Landscaping Before a Roof Replacement?

Cut back any overhanging branches or shrubs that could interfere with the roofing project. Trimming trees and mowing the lawn will not only prevent obstructions but also make the post-project cleanup process quicker and more efficient.

How Do You Provide Safe and Reliable Power Access for Roofing Contractors?

Roofing contractors may need access to electrical outlets for their equipment and tools. Ensure that exterior outlets are available, or plan to use extension cords safely to provide power without creating tripping hazards.

Should You Remove Old Antennas or Fixtures from the Roof Before Work Starts?

If your roof has obsolete or unused items such as antennas or satellite dishes, make arrangements to have them removed before the project begins. This will prevent delays and allow the roofing crew to work more efficiently.

Why Should You Notify Your Neighbors Before Your Roof Is Replaced?

Roof replacement projects are noisy and can cause temporary disruptions in the neighborhood. It’s a considerate gesture to let your neighbors know in advance so they can prepare for the increased activity and noise during the construction.

How Can You Stay Communicative and Proactive During a Roofing Project?

Keep an open line of communication with your roofing contractors throughout the project. Staying mindful of any issues or concerns that arise will contribute to a safer, smoother process, and allow you to address any potential problems quickly.

We needed new gutters on the property we purchased in Ottertail County. Matt was very responsive and got us some gutters that matched very well with the existing exterior colors. The gutters are great quality and a reasonable price for installation. Looking forward to using them for more roofing needs in the future!

Lakes Country Roofing installed a new roof for us in September of 2025. The initial interview was thorough, all options considered and questions answered. The crew was efficient, hard working and friendly. And the cleanup was amazing...we have flowers and plants surrounding our entire house, and everything looked the same when they were done. Would highly recommend Matt and his crew!

A beautiful new roof in one day. Matt explained the full process and answered all my questions. The job was supervised, and a follow-up after the work to see the work was to my expectations. They did have to replace some sheets of plywood. This cost was explained to me before the work and was reasonable. My landscaping was covered, and the clean-up after was very thorough. I would gladly do business with this company again. I will post some during and after pictures.
